Hello - I'm Ed Davison
Audio technology student with 25 years’ experience in digital marketing.
As director of my own business, I have extensive experience in managing multidisciplinary digital projects and services, with particular skills in managing teams, deadlines, budgets and an array of complex technologies. I'm energetic, adaptable and love working in a team to achieve a common creative goal.
When I first started work, I was living and thriving in London at the time of the dot.com bubble, learning all I could about digital marketing, websites and project management.
To provide some perspective, Google was pretty new back then. Google Maps would not launch for another five years, people had only just started using email at work, and the wild west of the internet was in full flow. Reality TV had just become a thing and social media was just a concept called 'User Generated Content'.
After a few technical project manager roles for marketing agencies, I had the pleasure of working as Technical Director for an award-winning top 100 Interactive agency called World Archipelago Internet (WAI), based in Putney, London.
My responsibilities there included managing a number of web development teams and complex hosting infrastructure, and acting as technical lead and project manager for many websites built and run for Sky Television, including channels such as Sky One, The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, The Biography channel, and many more.
Sixteen years ago, and after five years at WAI, I left to become director of my own digital marketing consultancy, Digital Potion, where I continue to work with a broad range of clients – from FTSE250 companies to entrepreneurial start-ups and experienced small businesses.
I am technically agnostic, having worked extensively across multiple software and hardware platforms, demonstrating my ability to quickly understand and adapt to complex systems, internal processes and software. I have built and managed networked systems, enterprise server security, performed systems migrations and managed large scale cloud-based virtualisations. I’m also a reasonable coder, which deepens my understanding of software.
I have developed time management and leadership skills by managing multiple teams of developers across different time zones simultaneously in the US, India and UK, and I have led the technical development and end-user experience on hundreds of web-based projects.
Over my digital career, I’ve managed a number of UK government projects with million-pound budgets, and helped launch landmark British government initiatives, such as the UK Apprenticeship Service.
A large part of my day-to-day work involves collaborating with other creatives across different fields, such as graphic design and branding, animation, illustration, corporate film, webinars and podcasts.
While I've always found myself on the technical side, I wish to work more creatively and bring my work ethic and enthusiasm to a new role within audio industries, as well as online.
After the Covid-19 pandemic, I wanted to continue to grow my skills outside of the web marketing world, branch out and create more space for creativity in my day-to-day life. I wanted to collaborate with artists and do something with sound and music, to develop my own musical skills and my interest in film sound design and audio post-production.
My experience with technology and my love and appreciation of music throughout my personal life, has been enabled through my business, which has provided an opportunity to learn and develop these skills further. After initially going down the self-taught route, I have since taken the full plunge and enrolled as a student at Kingston University, where I'm currently studying a BA in Music Technology.
Going back to education after all these years in work has been a great experience, and I hope to further develop my audio skills and explore a new career in the audio, game and film industries.
As a result of my recent studies, I have become experienced with three main Digital Audio Workstation products, Avid Pro Tools (for studio audio recording), Ableton Live (for supporting live performances) and Apple's Logic Pro (for creativity, ideation, sound effects and sound design).
I am learning how to record in professional recording studios and how to process and mix audio.
I have the most wonderful opportunity to access and learn at the fifth largest professional recording space in the UK, the Visconti Studio. A 300M2 octagonal building at the Kingston Hill Campus which is absolutely packed with some of the oldest and some of the latest audio technologies where I continue to develop my audio skills and experience.
